Late 2013 iMac 27" UPGRADE

Hi,

I finish to read your teardown with a lot of interest.

As you were the first team to answer correctly to my interrogations about Apple upgrades, perhaps I will buy my first iMAC this year!

But before to do it, first I need to go deeper:

My choice will go to a MAC 27" core i7, GTX780M, 256 GB SSD, As I am unable to fix my storage for the next 5 years, I would like to know if I need later to move to a bigger storage (512 GB/1TB):

Q1) Do you know where to buy one?

Q2) Does Apple use to sell them?

and if I choose to upgrade my future "native" SSD PCIe 256 GB to fusion disk by adding a SATA HDD:

Q3) Which models Apple use to deal with (to be sure to get a size/heat/firmware compatible one)?

Q4) Does fusion Disk still work with 128+ SSD (256, 512, ...)

You describe exactly how to open, but:

Q5) Do you have a roadbook to close and put everything inside?

Q6) May you explain with more detailed/animated photos the step 17, 19 of the "Replacing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2546 Display" which is the detailed and reference teardown for the EMC 2639?

It seems that Apple uses Samsung SSD XP941 with a customized connector (XP941 uses a 4 lines PCIe, and MBA only a 2 lines)

Q7) do you check which models are used for iMAC 2639?

(this customized connector will disallow futures upgrade from native XP941 models sources: http://www.laptopspirit.fr/132869/samsun...)

Best regards,

Fred.

Buy the system that you need now and what you think you will need for storage (HD as well as SSD).

Worry about upgrading when you need to, not before. True, its a good idea to know if you can upgrade (the design allows it). But to try to figure out what to put in now is a waste of effort.

Forget about looking into the crystal ball here as no one knows what new technology will be coming out to either replace or augment what you currently have.

Costs = Need <> If you don't need it it doesn't cost you anything!

Waiting Vs getting it now <> He who waits till the cows come home looses what he could do in the meantime. Waiting won't make it cheaper if you need the equipment now.

Fred:

How much storage you will need only you can venture to guess... if you do video editing, music editing-production, photography, animation you'll need a lot. If, OTOH you play games, email and webshop - not so much. There's always the option of external storage, via the cloud or external drives.

Google & google shopping is your friend.

To reassemble reverse the steps.

Detailed questions about Guides should be directed to the author, - you might also make a comment on the guide.

Maybe you should be thinking along the lines of a MacPro not an iMac... the iMac is the family sedan of computers... the MacPro is more like a custom SUV or sports car.

Hi Machead3,

Your comments do not answer to my questions, My future computer will be a personal one so for this reason I will not spend half or a quarter of MAC PRO price, but I will use it for pictures and movies editing (2.7k, Full HD resolution) of extreme sports with CS6 or FCPX/Aperture.

This is my close objective, but I do not know if I will move to 4K or 3D editing later.

For this reason, why spend my money today for something that I do not know if I will use it later and will cost perhaps 50% of the prices in few months?

For all these reasons, from my point of view, the best thing to do is to go to 256 GB SSD, and when I will use to extend my storage: move to Fusion Drive adding a 3TB SATA Drive. but I need to know if it is possible to do it, and how...

Best regards,

Fred.

Fred - There is little MAchead or anyone else can say here as you appear to expect us to know what you clearly can't express what your needs are currently or will be nor are we able to tell you what Apple has in store for us in the next years systems.
