I have a original macbook air that the hard drive is starting to go and I would like to upgrade to a bigger size. Is it possible to get a hard drive out of a ipod classic or video to work on the macbook air original A1237?
Does anything special need to be done to get it to work?

The iPod drive on the Video/Classic (5th and 6th gen respectively) are not SATA drives. they are actually 1.8" Pata (ATA-7) drives. If you do want to try to accomplish this, purchase a Zif-to-USB connector, something like this will work. This will only allow you to format your drive or access it as an external drive. I believe that for A1237 the original Air version the connector is a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector and the connection is PATA. I remember to have read that there are issues with the iPod HDD interface and firmware and that is what makes them unusable for anything else but the iPod.

Your correct the early version of the Air is PATA drive.

If your iPod is still working I would leave it alone and get a new HD.
If on the other hand, the battery is gone and you know the drive is in good shape you could give it a try.
First, I would get a 2.5 PATA to USB adapter to see if you can format and prep the iPod drive, before opening up your system.
Then you'll need to check your system to see if the drive interface & HD connectors are the same. The Air's have two different HD connector setups (and interfaces PATA & SATA) and your iPod drive might not be the same.
Also don't forget to also measure the drive heights as some iPod drives may not fit the height limit in the air.
