Why does headphone jack audio crackle?

Son put power plug charger in car into headphone jack by mistake and kind of shorted the iPod. After powering down and up again it is now working fine and regular audio is good. The headphone though has music with an audio crackle even after replacing the headphone jack I bought from you. What else could be the source of the crackle?
