I have successfully installed the iFixit kit that adds an SSD drive to my Mac Mini 2011. It has been working perfectly for some months now and I am very happy.
However in an unrelated call to Apple just now because the left channel Audio has stopped working, Apple said i need a firmware update because of the SSD addition - is this true?

Updating the firmware is quite easy. Review this Apple TN on how to check what you have and follow it on getting the needed update if required EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.
As to your audio problem I do think you have a different problem as I've not encountered that in any of my 30 mini systems we have here. But then again, we don't have people listening to music so they might not have noticed.
For now lets see what you have and update it so when you go back to the Apple you can remove that as the issue (in there mind). Let us know what you had before updating and if the problem goes away.

Thanks Dan, I will check out the Apple TN link. Apple were suggesting that the addition of a second drive in a mini required a firmware update as the mini , even though it has the same MB as the server it's firmware does not cater for the second drive and may cause the mini to ' misbehave'.
Thats weird, I've added a few HD's & SSD's in the mini's we have here. Never needed to update the firmware for that either. I did have trouble with the drive cable assembles a few times. Apple had a bad run of them and some 3rd party cable also had issues. But that has nothing to do with your audio problem.
Is this a REAL Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Center, or are you dealing with someone that just has a shingle hanging in his/her window claiming to service Apple products?
It was a call to Apple support where I spoke to two gentlemen, one being the senior guy. His call back number was Ireland. The first chap asked me to "cmd/alt/P/R" at restart. This removed the SSD ox copy and tried to access the on drive. Net net however the mc is back to its fast self and all is well. My EFI firmware is at latest. The senior Apple guy said I would need an additional firmware update to cover the second drive, but given his system did not tell him that here are two SATA sockets I am thinking No I do not need a firmware upde. Thx
Wow! Apple must be having a had time getting good people for their support line. Here's a TN on the different startup key combos Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs. As you can see the OPT/CMD/P/R is to reset the NVRAM. It does hold the Startup disk info (when you have two or more volumes with the OS present). So all it did was altered which drive to boot from (now the HD Vs SSD). If the SSD's OS was corrupted this makes sense. So you should delete the OS on the SSD and re-install it. Make sure you have the special version for your mini. I think the version of Mountain Lion on the App store now is the latest (it wasn't for a long time). I would re-download it unless your sure you have the correct version. And, Yes you don't need any add-on firmware for your system. I would make the effort in sending in the evaluation back to Apple with your story so these guys get re-educated.
