Dual drive via optical bay on mid-2010 27" iMac?

Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 and 2374 Dual Hard Drive

Is this method compatible with the mid-2010 / EMC 2390 / iMac 11,3 model?

From what I've gathered, I'm guessing it's not recommended because mid-2010 machines support dual drives without losing the optical drive. But if I want a more simple installation, can I just use a 12.7 mm optical bay enclosure to add an SSD to my machine?

Yes you could swap out your optical disk with the HD carrier (in your case a SSD).

I'm not sure you'll find it easier (it's more work) than adding via the second SATA port the cable and anchor the SSD to the case.

Besides, you'll loose your optical drive needlessly.

I thought it would be less work, seeing as I wouldn't have to unplug everything and pull out the logic board, increasing my chances of breaking something. I would need only to take out the optical drive and house the SSD. Have I missed something crucial?

It's up to you which way to go here, think through the pro's & con's given your skill set. I've done this a few times, I find pulling up the logic board pretty easy. The screws on the optical drive tend to be difficult as they often have lock-tight on them. I also don't like giving up something that I find useful, in this case the optical drive. Here's the iFixIt kit: Dual drive kit if you want to review the installation process.
