Message on the screen requires to turn off computer, freezing it

My computer (18 months old) seems to be working normally but after several minutes a sign in the middle of the screen appears directing me to turn it off or to re-start it. This messages freezes all activity in the computer.

The message appears in English, French, German and Japanese.

I don't have insurance and the Apple service center wants $450.00 to fix it. Can anyone help?

It's a longshot, but you can always try different memory, or move the existing memory to a different slot, in order to troubleshoot if that is the problem. I'd also reset the PMU and PRAM, because that tends to clear up various issues. Reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling the OS would also be a good step, and would rule out software as the problem.

Reset the PRAM by holding alt+shift+P+R.

The Apple Hardware Test will tell you if your RAM is bad or if your Hard Drive is broken, without losing all your files by formatting it.

This is called Kernel Panic, I believe.

Unfortunately it is a logic board problem and if you want to keep the same machine, Apple's offer is reasonable. You could confirm this by (at startup) inserting the Hardware Test CD and running it to see if it diagnoses your problem. I think it will say logic board

Theres not enough information to jump to a bad logic board diagnosis.

Do you always get some life out of the computer before it freezes? I mean, when you restart it do you get to login and do some things on the desktop before the Kernel Panic screen comes up?
