DVD drive rejecting operating system discs
my DVD drive on my iMac G3 is rejecting OS CDs and DVDs, but music CDs, game CDs, and video DVDs work just fine. whats with that?
When a optical drives lens starts getting dirty it harder to read disks. The data on a CD is four times the size of a DVD. (imagine trying to read this print if it was four times smaller). The track pitch on a DVD is 2.16 times smaller, and the minimum pit length for a single-layer DVD is 2.08 times smaller than on a CD. By multiplying these two numbers, we find that there is room for about 4.5 times as many pits on a DVD. So CDs may still work OK on a machine but it may not be able to read the smaller DVD data.

get a $6 optical cleaning disk with brushes. I like the ones that let you use iso. alcohol, but not all do. let it run about 4-6 times depending on your patience. even if it doesn't seem to complete and play the music or show the video to prove it, it's still cleaning the lens, so run it a bunch. I'd also jam a nozzle from a can of compressed air in there as well. then run the cleaner disk again. (RadioShack still carries them).
either that or you swap the drive out.
