has been disabled for 2 million plus minutes

my sons ipod has been disabled and i have tried to do what was suggested in the answers related to this but i bought the ipod from a friend and our laptop wont recognise the device when plugged in so i cant fix the problem and now im not sure what to do. help please

kim, give us a bit more information about "have tried to do what was suggested in the answers " so we do not have to go through steps you might have already tired.

You'll need to perform a factory restore on the device. This can be accomplished by connecting to itunes, then holding the top (sleep/wake) button and the bottom (home) button at the same time until the display goes black. At this point release the top button but, continue to hold the bottom button. You should get a message in itunes noting that a device in recovery mode has been located. Simply click restore and you'll be good to go. Please note that this will erase any existing content on the iPod. There is no alternative way to disable the password. I hope this is helpful.

thank you it seems to be working but do i hold the button for the whole time or can i let it go?

Once it is in recovery mode you can let go of the home button. Sorry it took so long to reply.

i did all that you said and when it had one minute to go it stopped saying it had timed out. i redid it and got error as ipod is password protected. so still it is disabled for 2 million plus minutes... please help
