Have I ruined my disc drive?

I have repaired my open tray error by messing with the calibration screws inside my disc drive. About 2 months later it started not reading discs again and kept saying open tray. I opened it back up and tried again accept this time i turned the screws both a few full revolutions thinking that i would find where it stops and use that as a start point for calibrating. Open tray persisted and i started reading more online only to find out these screws are very sensitive and shouldnt be over turned. The x box acts the same as before put disc in ... reading.... open tray. So my question is would turning those screws a few full revolutions ruin the drive? Can i still repair this without buying new parts? And is it gonna be !$&# to find out the position for these screws now that i moved them so much... also i did not take a reading so where they started at is unknown. Stupid right? Thanks for any help in advance.

I think he is adjusting the pots, what im looking for is how to adjust the height of the laser guide rails so its parallel with the disc

Cal, still not quite sure which ones you "adjusted" from your description I go out on a limb here and thing you tried to adjust your pot's. One of the things with the adjustment is, you need to only adjust the DVD pot for that particular error. You will need a multimeter to hopefully get them back to a somewhat proper value.

Set your multimeter to 20K (ohms). Connect it to the two connections points marked on the image. Polarity does not matter to measure the resistance. Your original setting should have been

around 3.4k ohms > 4.2k ohms. The reason for adjusting the pot is to reduce the resistance which increases the power of the laser, which should (not always) eliminate the disc errors and “open tray” errors. Using a small screw driver, rotate the pot clockwise a very small amount at a time. To much turning will decrease resistance to much and can burn out the laser. Do not go below 2.8K. Of course you have to keep an I on your meter when adjusting it. From what I have been reading about it, the best value is in the range of 3.0k-3.4k ohms. This is for a Hitachi and Samsung drive. The Lite-on and Ben-Q drives will have pots that look different, but the procedure is the same. The reason why your DVD drive may have failed, could be due to an excessive power to the laser. You may have to replace it if the adjustment does not work. More info about that, on here and here as well as multiple others. Hope this helps, good luck.

Well we are talking about the right screws as they are the ones that would require a multimeter only problem is i dont have one and i adjusted them with a very small screw driver. this information is very helpful. If you dont think turning them as much as i did would ruin the drive then i might be able to find the right value with some luck still. I wont be able to get my hands on a multimeter though.

I would suggest that you do not even try to do it without a multimeter, you might just find yourself behind the proverbial Eight Ball. Those screws are more then just screws, they are potentiometer that can leave your drive absolutely useless.

yeah i the i really screwed this up... lol I have been messing with those suckers for 2 days now with a regular screw driver and just keep getting open tray error. Sometimes the disc will spin like crazy fast and im not sure if that has anything to do with those screws or not. Do you guys think i ruined the drive or not? would turning those screws as much as i have ruin it thats what i keep trying to ask?

Yes, possibly, but maybe not :-) What might have failed is the laser diode. Get a multimeter and set the pots to the value given above, then re-evaluate. If you have to adjust, do not adjust more the 100ohm at a time. The CD pot should be somewhere in the vicinity of 885 ohm

had the same problem and followed his directions word for word (and yes i had a multi-meter) and the system is working perfectly.... one note.. that screw is very touchy and it changed the readings dramaticly with very little turning but got mine adjusted to about 3 and its working perfectly ....thanks so much for the fix

Bring the scale of your multimeter down.

Where did you find/get these readings from (i.e., schematic)? Is this a standard with the drive. I tried to Google the device specs, but got a bunch of crappy websites/blogs. For now, thanks for the advice as I am also have this same issue recently. I will try the measurements and see how it goes. Lastly, do you know if the motor could be causing the failure? My laser doesn't go back to the read position sometimes, and there's a bunch of grinding noises made by what little movement it attempts when trying to start up.
