Can't remove two bolts from oil pan in my 2000 VW Beetle

I am trying to replace my oil pan (bad drain plug threads) and I can not remove the two bolts closest to the transmission. I went and bought a wably #10 socket and it didn't help either. The socket extensions are blocked by the transmission case. Does anyone have any helpful tips?

I welded a 10mm socket to a 5 mm hex wrench so they both made contact at the same time worked great make sure you line them up using a bolt you removed already

I used Triton # 12714 ( Kragen auto parts) Extra Long Metric Ball End Hex Key Set. Included 5mm. Ball end allows up to 25° angle. Best $7.99 I have spent in a long time!

The 6mm hex head allen bolts on my timing belt pulley are totally stuck... I don't have access to an impact wrench, but I have tried drills, but will not move the bolts...HELP

Finally got a larger star bit hammered into the head of the bolt. No fun at all! Now onto the water pump... thanks for your help!! Going to buy new bolts for sure. I have read that I should replace the motor mount bolts too.. better safe than Stuck.

The next option was a left handed drill bit.

Dave Phillips, look at your bolts, I believe that you should see a hex-type hole in the middle of of those. You could use a 5mm Ball-End Allan wrench. Something like like this to remove those two bolts. Also, take a look on here for some good instructions. Hope this helps, good luck.

Except the inside hex of the bolt is stripped. We cannot seem to get the 10mm on it to stay

There are tapered Allen bolt removal tools available that grip into stripped Allen bolts . You have to lightly drive them into place then turn the bolt out using a socket that fits the end.

If you can't find them bolt extractors (left hand twisted type) would work , but they are designed to work with a drilled out bolt. If you choose them you may have to drill into the bolt with a drill about 1 to 1.5 mm smaller than the tap drill size .

I f it was me I would re thread the drain plug hole either with a tap for the next size plug or get a self threading plug and run it in. Either way use a magnet to remove any metal from the plug hole before adding new oil.
