I had the same problem with both the A1278 and A1342, either black screen or white-out. Until I started looking at lightweight software and decided... nothing to lose... and put Linux antiX 23 on the A1342. And then put Linux Mint Xfce on the A1278.

Have you tried Linux lightweight programs... that's what worked for me. I had two MacBooks with the black screen of death and tried every thing I read others doing. Linux Mint Xfce went on one machine and antiX on the other. I bought both of these machines used and they were pretty much used-up when I got them... not anymore. Hate to look like a Mac-traitor but it is what it is.

Connect to and external monitor... if the display is still black you have a blown VGU (VGC) and only a logic board replacement could fix it (Video cards on Apple Laptops are soldered to the logic board and not DIY replace/repairable)

If the external display works you have a fault in the cables or LCD chain. You might be able to use it as a "desktop" connected to the monitor, or, try DIY replacement of the cable first, inverter board second, LCD last (order of expense/complexity).

Most likely to do with malfunctioning Discrete Graphics Card.

I had a MacBookPro 15" Retina suffering from same problem only after 2 years of use.

Upon a power down or restart, the screen goes black. The keyboard is still responsive.

To get the screen back, it is possible to put the laptop into sleep mode. Make the unit is turn off first, then press the power button to start up. When you notice that the keyboard backlit is on, perform another short press the on/off button to put the unit into sleep mode, wait for about a minute, then press on/off or any key to bring the unit up. In most cases, this (for some reason) will activate the use of the built-in Intel Integrated graphics card.

You should be able to use the laptop for most application, limited by what performances the Intel Integration Graphics Card can offer.

In most cases, if you only put the laptop into sleep mode, the screen should come back on when awaken. However, if you put the unit into shutdown/restart mode, you will need to repeat the above process to get the screen to display.

This is only a workaround to get the screen working, it is not a fix.

As mentioned by other solution posted, the discrete graphics chip needs replacing, which can be a costly fix. However if integration graphics is all you need, this workaround may be an acceptable solution.

Thank you so much! I tried resetting the SMC the PRAM and a few other things but nothing worked. When I tried your method it worked! Thanks again.

Here's what I did.

1. Hold down power button until it shuts down

2. Press the power button once to turn it on

3. Press the power button once to put it to sleep

4. After 1 minute click a random key on the keyboard to wake it up

5. Wait 5 seconds and then hold the power button until your Mac shuts down

6. Press the power button once to turn it on

And the screen turned on!

This just worked for me! I was in the same situation with TediTheWarrior. Much appreciated!

Worked for me as well, thanks! To try and make this workaround more permanent, you can run:

# Always use the integrated graphics card

sudo pmset -a gpuswitch 0

Software glitch. Hold Shift+Option+Control+Power together for a few seconds then try rebooting.

If that doesn't work, here's another option. I was able to get in (with the help of Apple Support, and set up voiceover. Then airplayed it to the Roku.

This will all take eons to set up and figure out but once it's set up, you have a working option. Be prepared to break a set of plates out of frustration in the meantime.

Make sure you turn off the "verbosity" or it will drive you insane. Somewhere in the accessiblity preferences. With the voice commands, turn on the option to add display to the upper right menu bar.

you can turn voiceover on and off with cmd f5.

Cmd-tab to finder

ctl opt mm "menu extras". This brings you to the top right display bar with the icons like display, graphics, wifi etc .

ctl opt right arrow (or left arrow to go back ) until you get to "display

Ctl opt spacebar to select the menu, then arrow (ctl opt arrow? not sure) to go vertically down the display menu. Go until you get to your TV or Roku listed in the menu.

Makre sure airplay is on.

Ctl opt spacebar to select your TV. You should now be able to see your screen.

Note - sometimes airplay will confine the cursor to the left side of the screen. IF that happens, just go back in again, and while doing that, make sure you are moving your cursor to the right on the trackpad with your finger as it's connecting.

I have noticed also that sometimes when hard shutdowns happen during airplay, the screen will come back on upon bootup. Perhaps this is similar to the issues described in prior posts with the turning it off puts it to sleep.

However once something requires the use of the dsicrete graphics card cones on, such as Chrome, the screen will switch to that card and in so doing, go black again. So in that case you'll have to have it airplayed.

THsi allowed me another year of use on my compute, as well as to get in and get any backups. Hope it helps someone.
