Backlight stays off after waking from sleep

Hi,

When I open the lit op the macbook, the computer wakes normally, except that the screen won't light up. When I adjust the brightness, the backlight goes on. The problem also occurs when I put the mac manual to sleep.

I searched for related topics, but since i have had troubles before with inverter I'm pretty sure this isn't an inverter problem, because I did a fresh install and everything was solved, but when I replaced my files with migration assistent from a time machine backu^, the problem was back.

So i guess this is a software problem?

I'm on OSX Lion 10.7.5

Thanks,

Gorik

It sounds like you're correct in thinking it's a software issue. I've seen this behavior pop up a few times over the years, I believe starting with 10.6....

I would first try to isolate the faulty data. To do this I would create a new user account (maybe just enable the Guest account), log in to that account and see if the behavior still exists. If it does then it's a system wide issue, meaning the problem will probably exist somewhere in the /Library folder. If the issue does NOT persist in the fresh user account then your issue is probably somewhere in your user's Library folder (you can get to this by going to the Go menu in Finder, holding the option key and selecting Library from the list of options....

You might also try booting in Safe mode, by holding Shift down while powering on the machine, letting go of Shift once you reach the Apple logo with the spinning gear and a progress bar. If the issue disappears with this then a faulty extension may be to blame.....

Let us know what you find out!

Hi, thanks for the reply;

Same problem when using the guest account, but when booting in safe mode everything works like it should.

Based on what you say it probably is a system wide problem than?

It's probably not that easy to find a faulty extension or anything else that's going wrong in the library folder?

When you boot in Safe mode you are temporarily disabling third party extensions and startup items. I would troubleshoot by moving items from /Library/Extensions/ and /Library/StartupItems/ to a temporary folder on your Desktop, rebooting and seeing if the issue persists. If the issue is resolved by moving those items then you know that one (or some) of those items are to blame. You can start placing them back into their respective folders one by one, rebooting and testing each time, until you find the one that triggers the bad behavior. Hope that helps!

Also, here is the Apple KB article on Safe mode, which describes what it is doing. One other possibility is fonts but I think it's a bit far fetched that a faulty font would be causing this. Never know though... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

I can't realy give you an update today, I compared the extensions running in safe mode and those in normal mode and deleted those that werent loaded in safe mode.

But so far it fails booting, so I always have to restore from time machine.

I think it'll take me alot more time to figure this out..
