Replaced dock connector and now no longer charges?

Please read carefully.

I have an iphone 3gs where the ringer stopped working. I researched this and it seems the speaker went bad in the dock connector. I ordered a new dock connector and installed it. The ringer now works, but the phone will no longer charge. It shows the symbol that it's plugged in, but doesn't show the lightning bolt anymore. I swapped back the OLD dock connector which never had a problem charging, and now it doesn't charge either! Hmm. I can't remember if I turned the phone"off" before I replaced the connector, if this matters.

I'm getting very frustrated, and I'm willing to try more troubleshooting. Please chime in if you can. I'm a girl, and yes, I do have a volt meter, but am very amateur with it.

jackie1, since you are not sure if you if you turned it off, check your fuses for continuity. Here is my answer to a similar question. "I posted another one of my pic's for fuse location. Dimensions are 3GS fuse is 2mm x 1.20mm and the 3G one is 1mm x 0.30mm approximately. This information is from my notepad and not sure where I got it from, but I do believe it is from one of the forums. So I would like to give credit to the anonymous author ;-) Based on these specs the appropriate part number (Littelfuse Inc) seems to be 0435002 for 3G and 0467002 for 3GS. A small note about 3GS: the above fuse size is 0603, a little smaller of the original. The correct size is 0805 (2012 Metric), but unfortunately Littelfuse doesn't have this size available. An alternative could be MFU08052 from Vishay/Beyschlag Inc." previously answered on here. If you find that your fuses are okay consider getting a new battery. If none of that works, you may have to replace the power management IC on the logic board. You also want to check that connector 4 is on and clean, check the battery screws under don't remove sticker are on properly Hope this helps, good luck.

thank you! So the next question is, how do I test those fuses to see if they are good? Where do I put the leads to, etc?

完成的

Place your multimeter in Ohm mode and place a contact to either side of the fuses. If they are working, your meter should show continuity

完成的

Ok, done. Everything shows continuity. My voltmeter is a centech 90899 and shows "1" before touching anything, then when I touch the leads on the meter together, it blinks, which did the same when I touched the fuses. Those are the smallest fuses I've ever seen. I don't think my battery is bad, because it has always worked, it was just a bad speaker I had and that's why I replaced the dock connector, now no charging on either dock. I did just test the battery too, and the voltage is reading 3.77v, so looks like battery is ok.

now what can I try?
