dual drive = fusion drive capability?

Hi, very interested if this will enable a fusion drive capability similar to the new iMacs about to come out? Also, I still use my optical drive quite a bit, so if I did this, will an external optical drive (like from a MBA) work with my 2009 iMac 27" quad core? Thanks

iMacs work wonderfully with external optical drives. I have one on both my iMac and Mac mini. The fusion drive is basically both a physical hard drive as well as a solid state hard drive combined. The fusion drive will work in anything... in fact I see Seagate sells a solid state/physical hard drive you can install to replace your current physical hard drive. (a physical hard drive/disk is one that has the spinning platters and a solid state drive is one that has no moving parts) So to answer your question, the hard drive has nothing to do with the optical drive and they will both work on your iMac.

Thanks, for the most part, I think that answers my Q. I realize that the fusion drive is 2 (hdd + ssd) drives working in unison, what i was mainly asking was about the 2009 imac and if the apple fusion software on the newest OS will work with it. I thought I was tagging this question with the 'Optical bay to hard drive enclosure' part listed on the site. My plan is to take out the optical drive, replace with an ssd and then attempt to use it as a fusion drive. I would also like to encase the old optical drive and use it via usb. I have my old 128gb ssd from my MBA that i can use with an adaptor. Does this still sound like a plausible possibility? Thanks for your help :)

I would like to do exactly what William Evans describes. Take out the potical drive, replace with SSD and make a fusion drive with the existing HD and new SSD. Does this work? I have made a Fusion Drive in my MacPro so it should work here too. Anybody done it?
