Computer Won't "start" up?

tried downloading an online game and upon the download completing, my computer began to act funny. (i.e not letting me access my files, or get into control panel etc etc.) i tried to restart it and that's when the real trouble began. the first screen for the dell bios 2.6.6. comes up, then the window's xp loading screen. after that, the window's welcome screen appears as normal (no greeting sound though) and that's where it leaves me. i can move my mouse around the screen and etc but it's not letting me onto my desktop. i've tried everything on the dell website i can but nothing is working. it will not allow me to enter safemode with or without the command prompt. it goes to a black safe mode screen, then reverts back to the welcome screen. i don't need anything from off the computer desperately i just want my computer back.

sounds like you got a file that you shouldn't have. I guess you got more than you bargained for i.e. virus/malware. You could try to repair your Windows OS. Check on here for very detailed instructions. You could also try to download a Kaspersky rescue CD designed to scan, disinfect and restore infected operating systems. It should be used when it is impossible to boot the operating system. It is the least favorite of mine due to its lengthy and cumbersome approach, but it works. The only other tool I could think off is a Hirens Boot CD which has all the tools needed to repair your OS. Last but not least, you may have to reinstall Windows XP. If you install it into a different directory, other than the default one, and do not format your hard drive, you will still have access to your files. Hope this helps, good luck.
