Is it possible to repair the display only?

After having read your teardown carefully and analyzing the pictures it seems clear that the display assembly cannot/should not be taken apart in order to fix the facetime-camera or other minor components etc.

Now in case the actual display breaks (e.g. by closing the lid with the MacSafe plug under the screen), can anyone tell me whether it is possible/recommendable (for someone with proficient tinkering skills) to repair the assembly by just replacing the display?

Both the display & the assembly have started appearing on several websites but the price difference is pretty significant at this point (USD 300 for the plain display, USD 800 for the assembly), thus my question.

Thanks for any replies!

You can't really loose anything here as you will need to get the point of taking the assembly off anyways to replace the discrete display unit within it.

The iFixIt crew tried in the teardown, in the process they broke it! So it's not easy to take apart. The good news here is yours is already broken! (no lost skin here).

The real issue is putting a new display into the frame and putting things back together. Review the iFixIt guides to see how its done. Maybe you'll need to hit up your friends for a loan to get Apple to fix it.

Good Luck!
