What part of the screen is causing this problem?

My son brought my old laptop to his cousin's house (not in a laptop bag mind you). He doesn't remember dropping it but now the screen is doing this:

Opening and closing the screen doesn't change the pattern (trying to rule out a loose wire).

Thoughts?

This issue is a damaged LCD display. Below is the guide to replacing the LCD display (Assuming your Macbook Pro is a Pre-Unibody model judging by the picture)

Hope this helps,

I dont think that a loose wire would have that effect. That seems to be a cracked screen.

The LCD looks perfectly normal when off. Cracked from the inside?

完成的

One of the layers of the lcd screen is most likely cracked. I just searched MBP cracked screen and the images returned look a lot like the issue you have, eg.

If you want to make sure that the issue is not GPU, cables or connections related, hook it to an external screen.
