Why isn't my MacBook's trackpad working properly?

The trackpad on my unibody white MacBook has started misbehaving, it works for about a minute then the cursor starts moving around for no reason and multitouch gestures are activated randomly as well. After some time (30 seconds?) it starts working again.

This whole thing keeps repeating again and again :(

I have already tried removing and cleaning the trackpad and reseating the connector but this problem just won't go away!

My wife's mid-2011 macbook pro 13 inch is having the same problem. I searched and found several things to try. I included a very LONG thread on apple's forums. I'm taking it in today to Apple to see what they think. It's still under warranty, and I'm thinking they'll probably have to replace the trackpad. Tried all the tricks I could find, and a lot of times they help, but it ALWAYS comes back.

I'll keep you posted after trip to Apple.

A workaround would be any small Bluetooth mouse (doesn't have to be Apple) or it sounds like you need to replace the top case.

Sometimes the trackpad problem can be attributed to pressure on the underside. If your particular model has the battery placement under the trackpad or palm rests, here's a simple test: plug into external power, remove battery. If the pad/curser now works properly, then you might have a battery that is beginning to bulge, putting pressure on the backside of the pad. This often happens with after-market batteries.
