I had this problem with strange colored screens. It is due to the video card developing a bad connection. You need to get the whole logic board resoldered. I discovered this by a lot of searching online to diagnose the problem. Some people tried to fix the problem themselves which is not for tech challenged folks- it is really better to get a professional to do it. Just want to add that given the cost of replacing a whole motherboard you are at the point where you might as well buy a new mac. This solution is of course not 100% guaranteed to work. Given the choice of ditching a machine that I added a DC inboard to, upgraded to Leopard and bought a brand new power supply and battery for - it seemed I had nothing to lose ( if the machine was a goner) by getting the logic board repaired. I am not a engineer so I was happy to find a solution - which is a fault documented by Apple for the g3/g4 iBooks.
