From my experience with other pc drives and storage devices you should be able to remove the hard drive and connect it to a Windows unit. I don't have any Mac experience so I'll speak of Windows.

# Remove the PS4 hdd with the unit completely off.
# Connect to your pc using usb to SATA adaptor.
# Go to disk drive map to see drive. Computer drive should be C: external drives are usually a different letter.
# Open the CMD: prompt type chkdsk then letter designation of the disk. So your line of text will be
# CHKDSK G: /f
# Also you can simply right click the drive  in file explorer, click properties, click tools and then check. This may be a more direct route.
# If your drive is not recognized it may be failing and need replaced.
# I would try this before going through the more permanent “initialize system" option. It may take a little time but should be less of a pain in the ass than recovering all your games and save data from th PS Plus cloud and PS Store.
