While driving not shifting gears hear metal grinding

On Thursday i had my car towed by aaa to a mechanic shop to get fuel pump fixed.  Picked up vehicle yesterday and now while driving the vehicle will not shift into gear and hear grudging metal sound.  What could this be?  Could the towtruck have done something wrong or is the transmission gone out?
