You really shouldn't use it on the internet as there are security weaknesses that Apple won't address as the OS is just too old. As you noted many newer apps just won't run as this system uses the older PowerPC CPU Vs the newer Intel CPU's which use very different instruction sets to work. Thats also why you can't upgrade beyond OS-X 10.5.8.
 
I would max out the memory to 2 GB if you can getting the older RAM for this system will be hard to find. The next thing would be to upgrade the older hard drive (HDD) to a newer solid state drive (SSD). Here's one choice: [https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDMLP120/|OWC - 120GB Mercury Legacy Pro 2.5" 9.5mm IDE-ATA SSD]. This is one of the few IDE SSD's on the market. They also offer a smaller 60 GB as well as a larger 240 GB & 480 GB units.
