Sadly you really need a bigger SSD to really make this sing when doing video editing. I would encourage you to get a 1 TB if you can.

You also have a second problem as OS versions you can use on this system don't natively offer TRIM services as such you'll need this: [https://www.cindori.org/software/trimenabler/|TRIM Enabler]

OK, heres what you'll need to do to try to get your current SSD to work:

First I would clean out the cache & log files your system keeps. The easiest way here is to us an app like this one: [https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/disk-doctor-clean-your-drive/id455970963?mt=12|Disk Doctor] I'm not sure if this will work under your older OS so do check first or find a different app that does the same.

I would then make a full backup of your drive (wll the partitions you have stuff on) as you'll need to wipe it down to re-install the OS after getting rid of the extra partition you created. But, before you wipe the drive make sure you have a bootable drive CD, USB or FireWire (your best option here) with the OS installer present. For now lets stay with what you are running now (10.6.x).

After wiping down your SSD drive reformat it with a single partition using Disk Utility from your external bootable drive GUID & Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Now run the OS installer to install a fresh copy of your OS. At the end of the install process you'll be asked if you need to migrate any files over. You'll need to run the Migration Assistant twice here once to copy the apps back to your SSD (as few as really needed) as well as the user accounts. Hold off on migrating any user files. Once you've completed the OS, Apps & user accounts you should be able to run your system without any issues. Run the Migration Assistant again if you need to move any files over to the 2nd drive and then you're done!

Things I would do here is upgrade your systems memory to the max of 16 GB. As for upgrading the OS Yes, you can go to OS-X Leopard (10.5.8). Just be aware you could encounter issues here depending on the versions of your programs. You might want to try testing the waters using your bootable external drive before upgrading your internal drive.

Good luck!
