First, keep your security updates done. You don't have to upgrade the system. Kernel Panics can be hardware or software related. Keep an external backup of your data at all times. Just plug in an external hard drive and it will ask if you want to use it for a Time Machine backup. Install a good anti-virus such as Symantec. Apple is now a target because of their success, no one cares about Bill Gates anymore. To see if something you added is causing the problem start up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on start up.
