iPhone 3GS: Why won't my iPhone charge after the battery drained completely?

I went camping recently, and of course my battery drained completely about a day and half in. Once it drained I put it away in my bag.

On the way home, I plugged it into my Griffin iTrip to charge it, and I got nothing - no red battery, no screen flicker. I left it on there for at least a solid hour.

When I get home, I plugged it into a wall charger thinking it just needed more juice. It had been taking a really long time to charge lately, but once it's charged, the battery seems to hold it just fine. I left it on the wall charger for several hours, and I still got nothing.

At this point I tried rebooting it by pressing Home+Power, and I actually see a little flicker - like it's trying to kick over. If I hold them down for about a minute, it will actually keep flickering until finally it shows the dead battery screen, but that will go away in a few seconds or as soon as I unplug it from the wall. I can't get back to it unless I repeat the process from the beginning.

My first thought was the battery, but after reading some posts here, I'm not so sure anymore. It seems like it might be the charge circuitry or the dock connector. It's out of warranty, so I'd like to try fixing it myself. I figure at this point I can't make it any worse.

Is there any way to help pinpoint the cause other than guess and check? If not where should I start? Has anyone seen something similar to this?

I've had the phone for about seven months, but it was a refurbished unit from Apple.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

iPhone 3GS: My drunk friend slept with my iPhone and peed in his pants

My iPhone 3GS was pee'd on by my drunk friend who slept with it the other night at a party. He didn't tell me till the next afternoon which the camera was still moist and foggy. So i dried it up but idk if he tried turning it on. Two days goes by and nothing works, so i decide to open it up and look at the logic board and the copper contacts attached to the battery are corroded and have like little dark spots. i sprayed little amounts of contact cleaner and cleaned them up brand new but nothing. I'm charging it now but still no luck.

My iPhone's battery charge is going down while it's plugged in to my car charger. It only does this while I have the Maps app running, and as soon as I close down the app it begins to charge again.

I use this app fairly regularly and haven't had problems charging and using the app at the same time until now. Is the GPS app somehow using more power or is my battery faulty?

iPhone 3GS: Why won't my iPhone 3GS turn on?

My iPhone 3GS (32 gb) randomly turned off last night and now it won't turn back on. I know it was at least 70% charged the last time I used it, but I wasn't using it when it randomly turned off.

I tried to charge it with my wall adapter, car adapter, and I tried hooking it up with USB to my laptop and nothing has worked.

Do you think this a battery issue since it doesn't even show a "charging" symbol when I plug it in? It is an older phone and I've never replaced any parts on it.

I want to avoid having to restore since I will lose all my data and photos (which wasn't properly backed up the last time I connected to iTunes). :( Please help!

iPhone 3GS: "Temperature" screen even when the phone isn't hot?

After changing my battery, the battery works fine again, but a few days after I changed it, I started having "overheating" problems. These are not actual overheating problems, because the phone isn't hot, but it keeps showing me the "Temperature" warning and telling me I can't use the phone until it cools down.

This has happened fairly constantly at seemingly random times, and thus far, the phone has never been hot to the touch. It even happens while the phone is physically cold to the touch (outside in 20 degree F weather, for example).

Today I can barely use the phone, it just says "Temperature" pretty much all the time. For a few seconds, sometimes it goes back to the normal swipe-to-enter screen, but it goes right back to the Temperature warning screen after that.

Everything else on the phone works, so I'm sure the repair went smoothly otherwise. Again, this took a few days to start showing up.

Here are the relevant facts, along with some things I've tried to troubleshoot and such:

I installed a CPU monitor but nothing seems to be taking up the CPU or anything like that.

I've killed all the background apps and it still happens. I've also left it on airplane mode for hours and it still happens.

I've tried a full reboot, as well as a restore from backup.

The battery is not draining faster than normal or anything like that.

This phone has no history of water damage and i don't sweat a lot or anything like that (nor do I keep it in my pocket).

I've never seen this temperature warning before swapping the battery.

I don't use a protective rubber case or anything like that, the phone is just sitting on my desk.

Charging the battery no longer works because it doesn't seem to charge while it's on the "Temperature" screen.

I saw no corrosion inside the iPhone at all when replacing the battery.

I'm running the latest firmware (6.0.1) and it's not jailbroken.

Thanks for your help!

My iPhone recently spent time in saltwater. I left it alone for a week to dry out, and then I tried to turn it on.
iPhone 3GS: How to turn off an iPhone 3GS without using the power-button?

Hello there,

This is my first post here, so I apologize in advance if I missed something. It's a rather practical question.

Is there a way to turn off the iPhone (3GS in my case) without using the power button? The button works physically - I can press it (and it feels normal) - but to no effect. Since I don't want to open it while it is still powered on, I wonder if there is an alternative to waiting until the battery runs out and the phone turns off by itself.

Thanks,

iPhone 3GS: How to fix "Charging not supported by this accessory" problem?

I'm trying to get a used iPhone 3GS to charge properly but continually get the "Charging is not supported by this accessory" message. The phone is running iOS 6.1.6. The seller said it had been jail-broken at one point but that that had been undone (restored via DFU mode).

I've tried three cables: an Amazon branded one, a Belkin and an Apple (from an iPhone 1). All gave me the "not supported" message. However, all work fine with my other iPhone 3GS (never jail-broken).

These are the other things I've tried but have proved fruitless:

- Restoring the iPhone,

- using an Apple USB wall charger (directly, not through a cradle) with all three of the above cables

- Installing two different dock assemblies

- Installing a new battery bought from ifixit

- shorting the data lines of the cable (saw it on Youtube) on the phone side of the cable

Interestingly, cooling the phone either in the fridge or on an ice-pack before charging seems to increase the chances of a successful charge, but I worry about the condensation that builds up on the phone as it warms up.

Sometimes the phone trickle-charges despite the error message but other times it does not. If it does, it usually takes overnight to do so. Sometimes if I jam the cable hard or stick it in partially or wonky, it’ll charge ok without the error message for maybe 20 seconds. Rarely will it charge all the way without the "charging not supported" message.

At this point, I can only conclude that there's either there's a motherboard hardware issue or that Apple's tight-fisted attempts to destroy functionality of 3rd party accessories that somehow don't meet its hardware standards via software/firmware updates has essentially bricked this phone.

Any suggestions for further troubleshooting would be appreciated.

iPhone 3GS: No Power, No Charging, No iTunes

Hi everyone, I need some help please with this iPhone

It's the 3GS 16GB, it does not power up, and does not charge, and it is not recognised in iTunes, it is basically dead!

this has happened after a cheap copy chinese wall charger was used to charge the phone, this is 100% sure because it has done the same to my wife's iphone!!

I have tried to press and hold home and power button, also tried, holding the home button and connect to iTunes, but Nothing!!

Anyway, I have opened it up, dismantled it, tested the battery with a voltmeter and it shows 0.12V, a good battery should show 3.7V

So I have bought a new battery and I have tested it before fitting, and it showed 3.7V on the voltmeter,

After fitting the new battery, the iPhone switched ON, battery showing 40%, but it still does not charge and is not recognised in iTunes, also, the slide button on the screen does not work, so I can't get to Home screen.

After 1 hour, same problem, iPhone does not switch on, does not charge, opened it again, tested the new battery and it shows 0.14V, so it is drained!!

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

What should I do next?
