Solid State Drive: Adata 256GB SSD died, **I fixed it**, now I can't recover data from it

I have an Adata 256GB SSD that just died all of a sudden, PC would not see it in BIOS, and plugging it in externally to other PC's would not do anything, it wouldn't even show up in disk management. I ended up taking it apart and reflowing it, and surprisingly, It Worked!

Now it shows up in disk management as unallocated, and my GetData Recover My Files software could see and scan it. Unfortunately, it could not find any files on it (I have always used this software for data recovery and have had a fairly high success rate with it).

Does anyone have any suggestions for software to recover data from a functioning (I guess) SSD? I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Solid State Drive: Are there any good SATA I/II/III SSDs left new?

I am looking to upgrade my HP nc6000 to a machine that’s quite a bit newer and will have more video memory, as the nc6000 only has 32MB and I didn’t get the 64MB base board with mine. It works and I’m still going to keep it around, but I want something just a bit newer for some of the older games I want to run but can’t due to the limited VRAM situation.

That said, a lot of the old machines that are modern yet cheap if you’re willing to put some work in (think Core 2 ThinkPad and Latitude E series) to get it going again are going to be old enough to either be limited to SATA I/II or capped due to older option ROMs, as is the case with systems like the T61.

Since I am probably going to get a no HD machine that works at a discount since SATA drives are actually easy to get, I need an SSD with proper legacy SATA support. I know I can probably get a hard drive but a lot of the legacy models which are backwards compatible are NOS and will likely be hard to find given enough time. I would like to put a small 128/256GB SSD in to get around these stock problems.

One option I *know* will work is I can pull the Crucial M500 out of my T420, get another SSD for it (250 instead of 240) and clone it. I know this drive is old enough to have legacy SATA speed support, but it’s not a drop in solution since I need to take active steps to preserve the setup and data on the Crucial SSD. The T420 is SATA III compatible, so even if I get one of those legacy free/premium SATA II/III drives I shouldn’t have an issue.

Solid State Drive: MacBook Pro 2012/13 Blade Ssd Sandisk SD5SL2 512Gb - Faulty

Couldn’t find any better category to describe it, hope description will suffice. It’s an SSD I got some time back with a Macbook Pro I bought for parts I needed, seller was clear enough to state it might have been faulty, and that’s what it seems to be indeed. Since it’s an Ssd installed for quite a short time on Macs, I just have one machine to test it. However, I also have an adapter 7+17 (8+18) pins to SATA 2,5” if needed. It seems the drive can’t be seen or recognized either way. I have no idea if schematics for such drives can be found somewhere around and if it makes sense at all to try a repair, but since it’s a 512Gb drive it would be worth the try. I’ve done some basic testing with multimeter and I can see two voltages, 1.8v and 3,3v on random caps, the SSD mildly heats up as if it was working without any major shorts..under the microscope everything looks clean and shiny. One of the two coils shows a 1,05v. Has anyone ever succeeded or attempted an SSD hardware repair and can provide some insight ? I enclose a couple of pics for reference.

Solid State Drive: Is this SSD DRAMless?

As I am upgrading my desktop from the XPS 8500 to a custom built i5-9400f setup (new case, NVMe SSD, RAM, power supply and Win10 Pro license, used motherboard and CPU) I have an SSD in the XPS 8500 I want to migrate to my Mid 2012 MBP - it has spinning rust and it’s slow :-(. I already replaced the HD cable, so don’t worry about that.

However, the SSD will be a “used pull” from the XPS and I do not know which type it is. This is the SSD I will be moving to my 2012 MBP.

Is it known if this is a DRAM drive or DRAM-less? The spinning drive is painful to use more then ever as I phase spinning rust out!

OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD 1 TB: Does not show up in Disk Utility, Overheats.

I bought this about 3 years ago to upgrade my Late 2013 Mac Pro (Trash Can Mac), and it worked great until a few days ago when I had to tear apart my Mac to to fix issues brought on by the DIMM board itself failing. I also replaced the CMOS battery at the time because I was already deep into it, so figured might as well. Afterward, first boot I get flashing question mark file, reboot, boots up. Still having DIMM errors, so shutdown, swapped memory cards around, boot back up, back to flashing question mark file.

No matter what I tried, never got past that again, so I had to pull out my old SSD and swap it in, boots right up, memory is all working, original apple SSD is all good. I order OWC's SSD enclosure, get it today, plug the SSD in, nothing shows up. 30 min plugged in, jostling it around, trying things, nothing changes. Doesn't show up in Disk Utility at all, lights are all powered on the SSD and the enclosure, its plugged directly into the back of the mac. I notice it's getting really hot, so I unplug it.

Literally nothing has changed, I can't find any damage or signs of failed components visually, what am I missing? Is it worth trying to have someone recover? I had all my data, and even bootcamp installed on this SSD. I look up this SSD online and turns out this seems to be a common issue, with no solution so far I can find.

Solid State Drive: Is this SSD wear concerning?

I picked up this SSD on eBay (SanDisk X400) in June to eventually replace a 8 year old laptop due to age and battery wear issues. However, I have since setup the laptop and I did a wear check, especially on a used SSD… Potentially not good.

This SSD is a 75TBW drive, and it went from 90>88% due to the checks I did on it. Yes, the wear wasn’t 100% necessary but due to the severe amount of wear I noticed doing the initial write check, I wanted to go over it closely. Should I be concerned?
Solid State Drive: Samsung EVO 860 1TB really slow in testing

I bought a Samsung EVO 860 1tb SSD last fall to use in my MacBookPro (15”, late 2011), which is now dying, and now my iMac (27”, late 2012) needs a new HD, so I thought I would take this drive out of the MBP and use it in the iMac. I have the iFixit kit for iMac SSD installation, so the last step is confirming which SSD to use.

Before installing, I wanted to do some testing using Black Magic Disk Speed Test, here are the results:

iMac Fusion Drive (HDD+SSD):

Write: 150-200mb/s

Read: 250-400mb/s

Samsung 860 EVO:

Write: 30-50mb/s

Read: 220mb/s

So my question is, what’s going on here? It makes no sense at all that the fusion drive tests results are beating the pants off the EVO, which is giving worse results than just about any HD I can recall testing. I did test the speed via Thunderbolt 1 using Target Disk Mode, but also got similar results directly on the MBP that houses the EVO. The SSD is pretty full, would that have a drastic affect on the speed? Is this thing just bad?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Solid State Drive: What is the max TBW rating for the SM841N?

I have a Samsung SM841N mSATA SSD I got in a pile of parts, and while it works it has 20.61 TB written so far to it. This is rather high for an SSD, but for a older SSD it’s probably not too unusual.

However, I need to know the max TBW before it “expires”, if you will so I can get an idea of how used it was before I got it. My application isn’t one where I can’t take chances since I just use it as a music SSD (although it only has 27GB left) and the files are on another drive I keep as a backup, so I do have them elsewhere.

Solid State Drive: Is this SSD properly support SATA II?

This SSD came with a Latitude D630 which was super cheap, and I honestly only got it for the SSD since the drive is worth about as much if not more then the computer - it’s a common spec D630, so the SSD made up for that. However, my concern is if the SSD it came with is SATA II ready, as the D630 is notoriously known for not supporting SATA III support due to the chipset (i965GM or 965PM). It seems to be fine, but I also didn’t run it much because I need to find a keyboard.

Is this SSD support SATA II, or should I just put this in a more suited machine and buy a SSD that’s better for the D630? It is an SDSDSA-240G as far as I can tell. It doesn’t look like it does, but I also can’t find any positive proof either.

Solid State Drive: My computer can't read Apple SSD using PCIe adapter

I am trying to retrieve data from a dead MacBook Air 2012 SSD. It's a 12+6 pin SSD.

I purchased an adapter that plugs in to a PCie slot on a PC.

Here is link to one similar: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/352707107163

When I turn on the PC the light comes on on the adapter and I can see the device in disk management as Apple SSD however I am unable to access files from device. It doesn't appear in my Computer at all and I am unable to assign a drive number or initialise disk via Disk Management.

Could the issue be BIOS related? Is there a driver or need? Or is my motherboard just not compatible.

I have tried it on another PC and have had the same issue. Any advice would be grateful, thanks.
